Graham Condon at the Opening Ceremony of the 2006 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships in Christchurch |
NZWR wishes to pay tribute to a great person. Graham Condon, 58, was involved in a road accident while he was riding his hand cycle, and died on 8th September, 2007.
Graham was a six time New Zealand Paralympian. On top of his pioneering efforts as an athlete, he continued to create pathways for athletes with disabilities through his subsequent career in politics. Above all however, it is his personal side that will be cherished most.
Thoughts go out to his wife Kathy, and his two children Craig and Andrea. |

Defi Sportif
NZWR wants to enter a New Zealand Low Point team in the 2008 Defi Sportif. The tournament is the premier international Low Point tournament and is held annually in Montreal, Canada. May 2008 will see the tournament reach its 25th year anniversary.
For this project to really get off the ground there needs to be a driving force behind it. NZWR is asking for expressions of interest for someone to take on a manager and/or coaching role, to work with an NZWR sub-committee, and spearhead this project.
Please direct expressions of interest to one of the following NZWR board members:
Debs Parker: debbzparker@paradise.net.nz
Brad Hayward: bradhayward@xtra.co.nz

Auckland Wheelchair Rugby announces 'Invacare' as Sponsor
Auckland Wheelchair Rugby has a sponsor for the season. Invacare New Zealand has become the naming sponsor of all of Auckland Wheelchair Rugby's representative teams.
Auckland Treasurer Jai Waite commented "This is the first time a provincial wheelchair rugby team has been supported in this way and we are pleased that Auckland is leading the way".
"The sponsorship package will go along way to making our season successful in terms of equipment maintenance, player development, and tournament cost; and hopefully that will translate into on court success".
Auckland Wheelchair Rugby recently hosted the Invacare team to give them an idea of the demands of wheelchair rugby.

The NZWR Committee has decided to lower female classification by 0.5 for the 2007 WRC. For example, a female 3.0 may take the court as a 2.5 player.
Our rationale is we wish to provide an incentive to increase participation in the sport.
Dropping 0.5 off players that are over 45 years old was also considered, but at this stage there are still a few grey areas to work through.
As always, we would appreciate feedback. Cheers, Dan Buckingham.

Neil says the players in the Bay "are desperate to play wheelchair rugby this year - just low pointers at this stage, however, we may have a WRC team as well".
