NWRL Rd 2 – Melbourne August 10/11/12
Round two of the 2007 National Wheelchair rugby League saw all the teams converge on Melbourne to continue the battles and hostilities that had begun at the first round in Adelaide.
The South Australian ‘Sharks’ were going to be the toughest team again with the strong combination of Steve Porter, George Hucks, Ryan Scott and Sholto Taylor all playing great rugby. Victoria ‘Thunder’ and NSW would also see their close rivalry intensify with both teams striving to be the ones pressing for the second place spot in the finals.
The cool weather of Melbourne made things a little tough for players but it did not detract from some great games. The first day seeing SA defeat NSW and Victoria defeat QLD by a single goal. Day 2 had the New Zealand Development team almost stage a couple of nasty surprises on teams, with NSW just scraping home by 1 goal and QLD also finding things tough winning by just 4. On day 3 the Sharks handed out a huge thumping to a usually very competitive NSW and QLD gave the Vic boys a dusting up too.
In all a great round of fast, hard hitting rugby with some of the results proving that any team has the potential to win any game. Congrats to WA and NZL on there continued improvement in the league and a big thanks to all at Wheelchair Sport Victoria, all the volunteers and to the supporters for making it a very successful weekend.
